What began as a concert celebrating John Coltrane's birthday has evolved into a full-blown recording project — and now Ian Dogole brings 'The Last Trane to Africa' to Throckmorton Theatre for an unforgettable CD release concert.
Ian and his world-class collaborators will present an Afro-infused homage to the luminous legacy of one of jazz's most important figures, merging African percussion instruments with piano, double bass, saxophones, and drum set. Pieces will include 'Africa,' 'Tunji,' and 'Dahomey Dance' by John Coltrane, 'John Coltrane' by Bill Lee (Spike Lee's father), 'Afro Blue' by Mongo Santamaria, and 'Out of This World' by Harold Arlen. The stellar lineup features Richard Howell on saxophones and vocals, Sheldon Brown on saxophones and bass clarinet, Darren Johnston on trumpet, Frank Martin on piano, Fred Randolph on double bass, and Kendrick Freeman on drum set and hand drums. Afrikahn Jahmal Dayys, founder of the JaZzLine INSTITUTE and host of JaZzLine SESSIONS on KPFA and KKUP, will emcee the show.
Don't miss this one-of-a-kind, highly spirited musical adventure!
